L’élongation des loges chez les foraminifères planctoniques du Crétacé inférieur: une adaptation à la sous-oxygénation des eaux?

1998

Abstract Planktic foraminifera with radially elongated chambers appeared on four occasions in the early Cretaceous of the Vocontian Basin (SE France). These appearances coincided with or followed the deposition of organic rich levels which are evidence of hypoxic to anoxic conditions at the sea-floor. In addition, oxygen deficient surface waters are inferred from the occasional presence of Hedbergellas with deformed (insufficiently calcified) walls. It is suggested that the elongation of the chambers of these foraminifera was an adaptive response to the low oxygen content of surface waters, the increased surface area of the test allowing better gas exchange with sea water and the intake of …

Isoelectronic series of oxygen deficient centers in silica: experimental estimation of homogeneous and inhomogeneous spectral widths

2008

We report nanosecond time-resolved photoluminescence measurements on the isoelectronic series of oxygen deficient centers in amorphous silica related to silicon, germanium and tin atoms, which are responsible of fluorescence activities at approximately 4 eV under excitation at approximately 5 eV. The dependence of the first moment of their emission band on time and that of the radiative decay lifetime on emission energy are analyzed within a theoretical model able to describe the effects introduced by disorder on the optical properties of the defects. We obtain separate estimates of the homogeneous and inhomogeneous contributions to the measured emission line width, and we derive homogeneou…

centers induced by γ irradiation in sol–gel synthesized oxygen deficient amorphous silicon dioxide

2007

The effects of room temperature γ-ray irradiation up to a dose of ∼1300 kGy are investigated by Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements in amorphous silicon dioxide (a-SiO2) produced by a sol-gel synthesis method that introduces O{triple bond, long}Si{single bond}Si{triple bond, long}O oxygen deficiency. We have found that exposure to radiation generates the Eγ′ center with the same spectral features found in high purity commercial a-SiO2. The maximum concentration of defects induced in this sol-gel material indicates that its resistance to radiation is comparable to that of synthetic fused a-SiO2. The concentration of Eγ′ center increases with irradiation, featuring a sublinear …

Luminescence of oxygen related defects in zirconia nanocrystals

2007

The luminescence of undoped tetragonal structure ZrO2 nanocrystals was studied. The luminescence intensity depends on oxygen content in gases mixture in which the nanocrystals were annealed. The distorted Zr-O bond is suggested to be the recombination center for band carriers. The oxygen deficient defect is proposed to be responsible for photoluminescence.
